Wat Phrathat Doi suthep : Heart Of Chiangmai

Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep (Thai : วัดพระธาตุดอยสุเทพ) is a Buddishist Temple in Chiangmai Province, Thailand . The temple is often referred to as Doi Suthep although this is actually the name of the mountain it is located on. The temple is located 15 Km from the city of Chiangmai and is a sacred site to many Tai People. From the temple impressive views of Chiang Mai can be seen and it remains a popular destination of foreign visitors.

History
The original founding of the temple remains a legend and there are a few varied versions. The temple is said to be founded in 1383 when the first chedi was built . Over time the temple has expanded, and been made to look more extravagant with many more holy shrines added. A road to the temple was first built in 1935 .

White Elephant Legend
According to legend, a monk named Sumanathera from Sukhothai had a dream; in this dream god told him to go to Pang Cha and look for a relic. Sumanathera ventured to Pang Cha and is said to have found a bone, which many claim was Buddha 's shoulder bone. The relic displayed magical powers; it glowed, it was able to vanish, it could move itself and replicate itself. Sumanathera took the relic to King Drammaraja who ruled the Sukhothai.
The eager Dharmmaraja made offerings and hosted a ceremony when Sumanathera arrived. However the relic displayed no abnormal characteristics, and the king, doubtful of the relic's authenticity, told Sumanathera to keep it.
However, King Nu Naone of the Lanna Kingdom heard of the relic and offered the monk to take it to him instead. In 1368 with Dharmmaraja's permission, Sumanathera took the relic to what is now Lamphun, in northern Thailand. The relic apparently split in two, one piece was the same size, the other was smaller than the original. The smaller piece of the relic was enshrined at a temple in Suandok. The other piece was placed by the King on the back of a white elephant which was released in the jungle. The elephant is said to have climbed up Doi Suthep, at the time called Doi Aoy Chang (Sugar Elephant Mountain), trumpeted three times before dying at the site. It was interpreted as a sign and King Nu Naone ordered the construction of a temple at the site.

Present

Stairs to Wat Doi Suthep
The wat can be reached by road from Chiangmai. From the car park, at the temple base visitors can climb 309 steps to reach the pagodas or there is a tram . Entry to the temple costs 30 Thai Bath for foreigners (or 50 baht if you would like a two-way tram ticket included)and is free for Thai nationals.
Once inside the temple grounds; visitors must take off their shoes. Visitors must be appropriately dressed. The original copper plated chedi is the most holy area of the temple grounds. Within the site are pagodas, statues, bells and shrines. Aspects of the Wat draw from both Buddhism and Hinduism. There is a model of the Emerald Buddha and a statue of the Hindu God Ganesh. Views of Chiang Mai can be seen on the other side of the temple

Chiang Rai Asian Waterfowl Census:Thailand

.......At time of writing, the Asian Waterfowl Census or “midwinter census” (AWC) is well underway, with groups of counters from BCST undertaking responsibility for counting waterbirds in the Inner Gulf, while the Wildlife Research Division, Department of Natinal Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation is coordinating the activities of department staff to count waterbirds in and near protected areas throughout the country.
......There is still time to submit data for your favourite birding site that qualifies as a coastal or freshwater wetland (remember: rice paddies are wetlands too!) Any sites that contain waterbirds may be counted, large or small. All we need is a name and location (subdistrict, district, and nearest twon or settlement) and detais of the nhabitat type. (Map coordinates are wanted from those who have access to a map or who own a GPS).
.......Althugh the main count period is the middle two weeks of January, in reality any counts of waterbirds during anytime in January or February will be gratefully received.
.......This is a chance to contribute to a continent-wide count of waterbirds, that provides a “snapshot” of broad scale distributions on all waterbird species across Asia. It also provides details of numbers of both common and scarcer species that are used in three-yearly updates of waterbird population estimates by Wetlands International.
....This year We have Census Chiangrai Meeting In 17-19 January 2008 At Nong Bong Kaay Wild Life Sanctuary. Please Come To Join With Us. And Find Worderful Of Migaration bird.

Save Elephant

.................Established in 1995, Elephant Nature Park is home to over two dozen rescued elephants. Ranging in age from infants to old-timers, these previously abused and neglected creatures are able to live out the rest of their lives in peace and dignity on the park's grounds. Nestled in the breathtaking Mae Taeng Valley, about an hour north of Chiang Mai, Elephant Nature Park is a place where the elephants no longer work for humans. Instead, a team of full-time staff and park volunteers maintain the park and care for the elephants.
..................A unique experience for any visitor to Southeast Asia, Elephant Nature Park allows people to see elephants as elephants should be seen: living their lives peacefully, frolicking when the moment strikes them, and trumpeting to one another throughout the day and night.
Elephant Nature Park allows its rescued elephants to live the life of an elephant. No longer do they have to paint pictures with their trunks, play the drums, or perform demeaning circus tricks. They are not made to carry heavy benches on their backs, which can deform and even break an elephant's spine. They are no longer forced into submission with cruel implements such as "the hook" and they are not chained during the day.
...................At Elephant Nature Park, elephants are allowed to roam unfettered, eating and playing as much as they like along the way. They can wander down to the river for a bit of a splash or a roll in the mud whenever they need to cool down. They are free to choose their own family group, usually centering around one of the several baby elephants who live at the park. And they can have as much or as little human interaction as they choose.
...................If you are interested in an unforgettable and moving elephant experience, if you would rather walk beside an elephant than ride on top of one, then Elephant Nature Park is the ideal place to visit.
...................Elephant Nature Park offers the visitor a different kind of experience with the Asian elephant. Instead of watching elephants perform circus tricks or riding on their backs, visitors will see the park's elephants grazing, playing, and communicating as they might in the wild. And as a non-profit organization, the cost of every visit to Elephant Nature Park directly supports the elephants and makes our work possible.
...................Walk next to the gentle giants on your way down to the river, look into their eyes as you bathe them, feel the strength of their trunk when you hand them a bunch of bananas, watch them as they scratch their bodies on trees and when they flip their ears and flick their tails, see how they carefully caress their young... at Elephant Nature Park you'll quickly see why these majestic creatures are so special.
A visit to Elephant Nature Park is a wonderful introduction to the Asian elephant.

2 days / 1 night: Price: 5,700 Baht

Doi Ang Kang : Heven On Earth

One of the coldest places in Thailand, Doi Angkhang in Chiang Mai, is renowned as a scenic wonderland of orchards, flowers and forests. The area attracts tourists to enjoy the chilly beauty of this picture-perfect valley in the mountains 1,400 metres above sea-level. Here, the ever-present influence of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, can be sensed at the Royal Agricultural Station Angkhang which has done so much to effect the greening of the valley, bringing agricultural affluence and a better quality of life to the ethnic people there.

Doi Inthanon Chiangmai

DOI INTHANON, CHIANG MAI
...Most Popular Place For Countdown Is Doi Inthanon.Doi InthanonAt 8,500 feet above sea level Doi Inthanon is Thailand's highest mountain. It is a premium site for scenery and offers visitors forests, bird life and waterfalls. During the winter season the summit of Doi Inthanon is usually cool and dry, but over recent years temperatures have fallen lower and lower. You can now on very rare occasions experience temperatures below freezing point. The area is renowned for mist when temperatures decline and images of the mountain’s hazy beauty have become somewhat iconic. Two large pagodas built for the current King and Queen of Thailand are situated on the mountain’s summit. Doi Inthanon Forest has been established as a National Park. A trip to the mountain is often combined with a trip to Mae Klang, Wachiratan and Siriphum Waterfalls. With over 400 varieties of birds it is also a key destination for bird watching.
Details : The various sites on and around Doi Inthanon cost a range of fees. However, a visit to Wat Phra Mahatat Naphamethanidon will cost 200 Baht and this provides free access to most of the other sites available.
How to get there : Given the scale of the mountain, joining one of the many tours organized from the city might prove the best approach. Alternatively, take a bus to Chom Thong from the Chiang Mai Gate (south of the city) and then take a bus Mae Klang Waterfall and then another bus to the mountain.
