Thailand - One of the Best & Cheapest Places to Live and Travel in the World

If there's a place in the world where you can get the greatest clothes at the cheapest price that would be -- Thailand! Similar to China, Thailand offers a lot of great cuisines and a host of other things one can enjoy. Beaches are located almost everywhere.

Tourists and locals alike can enjoy diving and para sailing at a price relatively cheaper than its neighboring Asian countries. Since the climate in Thailand doesn't change very much, it is an ideal place to stay.

During summer months, March to June, most people will either go for the beach or go temple-tripping. While it's ok to wear sleeveless and shorts in other countries on a hot summer, in Thailand, it is generally considered inappropriate especially for women. It's ok to use sandals though since it is required for both locals and tourists to remove them when they visit the temple and view it from the inside.

The main religion of Thais is Buddhism. As you may know, there are a lot of temples or wats as they would call it are ornately decorated. There are also such things as spirit houses. In Thailand, each house has a spirit which guards that house. One exceptionally famous shrine is Erawan Shrine, which was previously an execution site.

In terms of art and designs, Thai art closely resembles those of India and its neighboring countries. Their art usually involve religion, music and dancing. In sports muay Thai, more commonly known as Thai boxing, is their king. Thai boxing is actually a kind of marital art which sprung from Thailand's ancient warriors.

Thailand provides its people with an excellent value for money. With low labor costs, and a weak currency, foreigners and locals can enjoy available products and services at the least and most affordable cost. Popular tourist destinations, like Phuket and Ko Samui, though will have a slightly higher price than other locales. But with a budget of 800 baht, which is about $24 USD, one may already actually have enough for three meals, a dorm and transportation.

In terms of shopping, the skill one must know when one goes to night markets in Bangkok is the art of haggling. Whether it be Thai silk you are after, or the intricately woven clothing, or the smallest handicrafts that would fit nicely in your bedroom, you will most likely be succeed in getting the best price if you're patient enough to haggle.

Finding a job in Thailand is generally harder for foreigners, but knowing diving and English are a major plus. Thailand is currently in demand of diving instructors and English teachers since English is also being used as a form of formal instruction in most Thai schools.

Being a tropical country, Thailand also has its share of diseases one should watch out for like malaria and dengue. It is also uncommon to get HIV or AIDS. It's good to know that it's easy to get condoms though when one needs it.

Northern California is Beautiful All Year Around

The California Coastline is magnificent from Santa Barbara to Crescent City at the Oregon Border below the giant redwood trees. From San Luis Obispo through Big Sur towards Santa Cruz is some of the most scenic landscape in all the world. And there are plenty of excellent bed and breakfast places to stay along the way, once you go there, you never want to leave.

In San Francisco the view of the Golden Gate Bridge is stunning and once you cross and head back towards the coast it's just amazing to drive North along the Russian River. The Mountain Range between the coast and the Valley is stunning as well, with forest that seem to go forever. Then there is Mount Shasta and Shasta Lake. Then there is the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, as majestic, even more so than the other.

Having had the pleasure to spend lots of time in all these places throughout the great state of California, all I can say is that it is breathtaking and if you would like to learn some of what I have experienced, I recommend that you buy the best travel book of Northern California, I have ever purchased:

"Away for the Weekend; Great Getaways for Every Season of the Year" (Northern California Revised and Updated Edition) by Eleanor Berman; Three Rivers Press, New York, NY; 2000

If you feel you need to de-stress and get away for a weekend or two, or three, then you need to purchase this informative book and study the pictures and the sites and see Northern California and experience it's true beauty. Think on this, you deserve it.

maenam beach / Koh Samui / Thailand

a guide book says " Accommodation on Maenam's long, sedate beach is mainly of the bungalow variety, although there are now several 4 -5 star resorts as well. the number of good restaurants and businesses along its main road is steadily increasing. there are also numerous high-quality holiday and residential home developments and a growing community of long-term visitors. A fine, wide sandy beach and great view make this one of the island's most spectacular beaches". I personally much preferred eating in Maenam than in Chaweng.

What You Need to Know About Thailand Travel

Thailand is one of those destinations, which is forever teeming with tourists. The country holds an exclusive position in the hearts of all vacationers for the place has much more to offer than anyone can expect. Thailand lies in the South East Asia region and can be taken to be the land of Buddha. Almost all the Buddha devotees desire to visit this country once in their lifetime. This is due to the fact that Thailand has some of the unique and exquisite Buddha temples where perfect tranquility prevails.

A Concise Review of a Seemingly Interminable Place

The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is worth visiting spot. This sacred temple has Buddha statue that is 65 centimeter elevated and is entirely made of jasper quartz or jade. While the jade goes back to 15th century, the murals on the walls of the compound can be traced back to 18th century. The visitors can take a look at The Royal Thai Decorations and the Coin Pavilion. All in all the sanctity of the temple speaks through itself and the ambiance is enough to enchant the visitors.

Along with Temple of Emerald Buddha, several other grand Buddha temples can be seen once you move into the city of Bangkok. Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand has proved its worth across the globe. This metropolis has everything to offer to its visitors. From wonderful museums to thrilling nightlife, Bangkok has it all. The bustling city owns the largest South East Asian museum called The National Museum. National Museum has a gathering of various things like Thai art from old to contemporary, musical instruments, weapons, woodcarving, ceramics, clothing and sacred Buddha images.

Visitors that come to Bangkok never miss the opportunity to encounter Vinmanmek Teak Mansion that is supposed to be the largest teak building in the world. The Royal Elephant Museum and Dusuit Zoo are perfect places to have some learning with fun.
The Wat Pho temple near the temple of Emerald Buddha in Bangkok is perhaps the oldest and the largest of all Buddha temples there. The Wat Pho temple is known for its 46 meter long statue of reclining Buddha and the largest collection of Buddhas in the country. A refreshing massage therapy is done at this place that too attracts a lot of people.

Finally when it comes to shopping, Bangkok has it all. There are ample of markets here that will serve you with all the things of your necessity. The Chatuchak Market or The Weekend Market (that is open on Saturdays and sundaes only), the Pak Khlong market and markets in Chinatown and Phahurat district are particularly quite famous.

The Thonburi region resting on the west bank of river Thonburi has always gathered attention due to different reasons. The Taksin Monument that has a statue of Thailand's eminent king Taksin which is a delight to watch. The Royal Barges Museum that has a fantastic collection of boats, the outstanding one being the king's personal barge -The Golden Swan is definitely a pull in Thonburi.

Buddhist stupas area centre of attraction at Ayuthaya, a city that lies to the north of Bangkok. The oldest and largest temple here is the Wat Phra Si Sanphet, another famous temple is Wat No Phra Meru that has a green stone Buddha statue inside. The Ayuthaya and the Chantharakasen are the two significant national museums. The Lopburi and the Kanchanaburi town in the Central Thailand region is a host to a lot many tourists every year.

In the Southeastern Thailand region is situated the Ko Chang National Park that is crammed by people due to the various activities like elephant riding, diving, snorkeling etc. and also to enjoy the wildlife in this area. The Rayong Province has a set of exotic beaches along with the Khao Chamao-Khao Wong National Park that has striking limestone mountains, caves, cliffs and waterfalls including impressive wildlife. Pattaya is another eventful beach spot located 150 kilometers away from Bangkok.

The Northern Thailand is bedecked by the Lamphun Province that has numerous historical temples, Doi Khun Tan National Park, the Lampang Province that grounds the Wat Phra That Lampang Luang temple which is considered to be one of the most beautiful temples in Thailand and there is also the famous Thai Elephant Conservation Center which provides acre for sick elephants, animal shows and tourist exhibits from time to time. The Sukhothai Province is important for its Ramkhamhaeng National Park.

The Isan Region of Northeastern Thailand has the renowned Khao Yai National Park, which is a home for innumerable wild animals and the Phanom Rung Historical Park.

Few places at the Thailand's Southern Coasts like Phetchaburi city, the Southern Gulf Region (known for marine life and water sports) and the Andaman Coast are everlastingly meant for vacationing in Thailand.

Palawan, Philippines - The Overlooked Part of Southeast Asia

Thailand is surely to be one of the first places mentioned when you ask someone where to find an amazing island getaway in Southeast Asia. If, not Thailand, then maybe Vietnam, Malaysia or Bali, Indonesia. It baffles me why a country with over 7,000 islands is rarely mentioned. This country is the Philippines.

With the thousands of islands in the Philippines, where's a good place to start? A perfect introduction to island life in the Philippines is the Bacuit Archipelago in Palawan. This is a series of islands that are truly jaw-dropping in beauty. Here you will find a labyrinth of rugged limestone cliffs and outcroppings shooting out of crystal-clear turquoise water.

This portion of Palawan is a protected reserve. This means that there are very strict policies on development and require visitors to purchase park permits. These regulations have resulted in a paradise free of pollution and trash creating an absolute haven for marine life.

There are several great attractions and activities in this archipelago. Diving and snorkeling here will spoil you for a lifetime. We saw thousands of fish, beautiful coral, stingrays, glowing jellyfish, and to top it off, we swam alongside sea turtles. When not on the water, there is no shortage of white sand beaches, one of which is accessed by swimming through a keyhole in a cliff to find a secret beach surrounded by towering limestone cliffs.

Sometimes words are just unable to do justice to such a place of beauty. The next logical step would be to look at some photos, which will surely make you want leave the office.

Get a peek at the beauty of the Bacuit Archipelago in this travel and design website. The crazy part is that even the photos don't do this place justice, this is a must see.

A Bugs Life In Thailand

A bugs life in Thailand isn't worth much and it doesn't last particularly long either. You see, if it crawls, flies, jumps or just stands still it gets eaten...Thais love bugs. At least the rural Thai people do. They grew up eating bugs and wherever you find rural Thais you'll find bug carts cooking and selling them. You'll see the bug carts if you go to Thailand because rural Thais are everywhere especially in the tourist areas living and working and eating bugs. Some bug carts cater to the discerning palate, others offer a veritable smorgasbord of mouth watering critters.

So, you find yourself in Thailand and you come face to face with a bug cart and you want to sample one or two...but your not quite sure which ones.Well, thats where I come in. I may not be Zagat qualified to review bugs but I've had my fair share and think I can accurately describe the subtle nuances of a bbq'd scorpion or the pleasure of eating your first cockroach :)

The first thing I recommend before selecting your bugs of choice is to have a good drink at the ready, preferably alcoholic in nature. You need to cleanse your palate before you begin. After you've cleansed your palate for an hour or two ( 6-8 drinks should do) you're ready to begin. Below is a guide to some of the bugs available to help make your choice a little easier.

Grasshoppers: Grasshoppers are fried and come in two varieties...large and small. A professional bug eater will warn you to pull the legs and wings off before eating, a newbie to the scene will do the same after they stop choking, legs don't go down well. The large variety actually tastes pretty good to me, kind of like popcorn but not. Once you get past the fact that you are eating a bug they aren't too bad. The small variety tastes a little like burnt popcorn. Maybe its because they fry up real fast and have little meat or maybe mine were burnt. I give grasshoppers 4 stars and if you're only going to try one bug this is the one to try!

Beetles: Fried as well. Small, black and crunchy. I can't really remember the taste as I cleansed my palate a lot that night but they weren't horrible. I have to give beetles 2 stars because in the bug world they really don't rate high.

Grubs: See Beetles.

Frog: Ok, frogs aren't bugs but all the bug carts have them and when in Thailand... The first thing you'll notice is that your frog is small and they come in collectible poses, thats a nice way of saying they are fried alive and they come out looking like they were fried alive, but if you've cleansed your palate properly you won't care much. Honestly the frogs taste great. As a matter of fact they taste like fried chicken to me and I ate them by the plateful a few times. I didn't even need to cleanse my palate(get drunk)although I admit I did always wash them down with beer. Frogs I give 5 out of 5 stars. Tasty, filling and fun to play with especially in a bar where people can't believe you're eating these things.

Eels: Pretty much the same as frogs and actually not bad. The big plus is they don't have eyes or really a discernible head to mock you as you try to put it in your mouth. 4 stars for eels only because they aren't frogs.

Scorpions: I found myself looking for scorpions for days. Not every bug cart has them but they are plentiful if you know where to look. I don't know why I was fascinated by the thought of eating one but I was. And one night in May of 2007 after cleansing my palate for hours a plate appeared at my table. Scorpions are an upgrade to the every day bug. Menacing while alive and equally so while dead and being aimed at your mouth. I don't know if it was the claws or the eyes staring at me, but you can bet the legs and the stinger still attached made me rethink the whole bug eating experience.

I'm not sure if they are fried or cooked over coals as they just appeared miraculously on a plate and cooked but when contemplating eating a scorpion for the first time it's not really the cooking method that interests you. One thing is for sure ...they are crunchy and crunchy is always good. I started with the claws and worked backwards. The claws were very crunchy with a slight burnt taste but when you get to the body thats where the meat is. Also very crunchy the main part of the body has a burnt crablike taste. Not an easy taste to describe but overall not bad. Scorpions get 3 stars. Crunchy is good but due to the look of a scorpion hard to actually get in your mouth.

Cockroach: First I have to explain that I'm not talking about your run of the mill cockroach found in many homes and fine dining establishments in the world. No, I'm talking the free range( rice paddy) variety that is quite large. I mean Madagascar hissing roach large. Now scorpions are kinda scary but cockroaches are even worse. In western society we see cockroaches for what they are dirty nasty creatures that you stomp on. Unfortunately for me I was caught off guard on the way back to my hotel in Pattaya one night and although my palate was cleansed it wasn't cleansed enough but I was determined to try it all. The professional bug eater (a little Thai girl) prepared the roach for me by removing its legs then she showed me how to properly eat it. She grabbed it by its head and inserted the thorax into her mouth and bit down while pulling the thorax away from the head. I have to say this is the one I had the most problem with.

Surprisingly the taste was very sweet to me not in a good sweet way but like a cockroach sweet way. If I didn't know what it was it probably wouldn't be bad but when you know you're eating a cockroach it's never good. 1 star for the cockroach and not for those weak of heart or stomach.

Tarantula: This one has eluded me. I haven't found one yet....but there is always next time. Not quite sure if I'll be able to eat one but you can bet I'll be 3 sheets to....I mean my palate will be properly cleansed and then some before I try!

Born and raised in Baltimore Maryland I finally set out to discover the world in 2006. South East Asia has always been a beacon for me and Thailand its crowned jewel.

I write about my experiences in Thailand as well as the cultural aspects of being a foreigner in a foreign land. I blog daily about Thailand at: http://thailandlandofsmiles.com

Top 5 Highlights in a Swimming Pool Resort

In winter I get up at night

and dress by yellow candle-light.

In summer quite the other way

I have to go to bed by day.

~Robert Louis Stevenson

I bet you are thinking of how to spend your summer vacation- your summer whereabouts. During these hot days what we ever wanted is cool water- those splashing water to refresh us. One of the places I can think of for a plunging summer is to stay in a swimming pool resort that is definitely exciting. When I say exciting I mean somewhere that you can't resist giggling, or even shouting for joy with family and friends.

Certainly you'd go for a resort that is all complete with swimming pool supplies. Too, you'd check if you and the rest of your group would have so much fun and be in loved with the resort highlights. I have listed some resort highlights that I'm sure you have enjoyed one way or the other.

1. Pool slides

For me those giant pool slides makes a pool looks more engaging. So why don't you dare try it, scream as much as you can, passing through each slide.

2. Man made Waves

Who wouldn't get fascinated of that mad made waves coming your way as soon as you jump into the pool? Get you and your surfing board ready and have so much fun with those cool waves.

3. Rapids

This would be so much fun as you and your friends hold each other as it moves along.

4. Diving Board

Salad Beach on Koh Phangan in Thailand

Haad Salad, translated from Thai to English as Salad Beach, is a beautiful beach on the northwest coast of Koh Phangan in the gulf of Thailand. The beach is a short drive from the main port of Tongsala and due to the new roads around the island it is very easy to drive to even on a scooter.

The perfect white sand beach is roughly two hundred meters long and surrounded by the green rolling hills of the island. Fifty meters into the emerald green sea you will find a vibrant coral reef which has become a very popular site for snorkelling and diving. There you can swim with the tropical fish, blue spotted rays and even groupers. If you are just looking for a gentle swim then you will be delighted by the crystal clear water that lies between the beach and the reef.

Salad Beach is known by the locals as "Haadlad" and translates as pirate beach. It has been said that the secluded bay used to be frequented by pirates hiding both goods and even people. Over three decades ago the pirates stopped going to the beach as the local land owners and fishermen built houses and shelters. Then with the rise of tourism in the early 1980's, accommodation started to be built for the tourists. Accommodation on the beach now offers complete diversity from small beach bungalows to luxury villas and resorts. Over the past decade Salad Beach has really changed from just providing small beach huts to now providing anything from garden villas to even a 5 star resort. Fortunately the local land owners that have opened the resorts have taken care to keep all the buildings in good taste, adopting traditional Thai architecture with the most contemporary styles and designs.

If you intend to relax by your own private pool, go snorkelling with the tropical fish or simply visit and sample the fresh fish restaurants then Salad Beach can cater for your every desire.
