Haad Salad, translated from Thai to English as Salad Beach, is a beautiful beach on the northwest coast of Koh Phangan in the gulf of Thailand. The beach is a short drive from the main port of Tongsala and due to the new roads around the island it is very easy to drive to even on a scooter.
The perfect white sand beach is roughly two hundred meters long and surrounded by the green rolling hills of the island. Fifty meters into the emerald green sea you will find a vibrant coral reef which has become a very popular site for snorkelling and diving. There you can swim with the tropical fish, blue spotted rays and even groupers. If you are just looking for a gentle swim then you will be delighted by the crystal clear water that lies between the beach and the reef.
Salad Beach is known by the locals as "Haadlad" and translates as pirate beach. It has been said that the secluded bay used to be frequented by pirates hiding both goods and even people. Over three decades ago the pirates stopped going to the beach as the local land owners and fishermen built houses and shelters. Then with the rise of tourism in the early 1980's, accommodation started to be built for the tourists. Accommodation on the beach now offers complete diversity from small beach bungalows to luxury villas and resorts. Over the past decade Salad Beach has really changed from just providing small beach huts to now providing anything from garden villas to even a 5 star resort. Fortunately the local land owners that have opened the resorts have taken care to keep all the buildings in good taste, adopting traditional Thai architecture with the most contemporary styles and designs.
